reader's delight

by Peter Terzian

  • Not too long ago, the independent bookstore—historically one of the treasures of this literary city—seemed like an endangered species. Chains were cropping up in nearly every corner of New York; beloved shops like Books and Co. and Coliseum Books fell victim to rising rents and Internet competitors. But through the efforts of a new generation of booksellers, the friendly neighborhood corner bookstore is making a comeback. New shops are opening every year, many in districts that haven't had a bookstore before now. Longtime favorites like Three Lives and Crawford Doyle hold on by appealing to true-blue locals—stop by for a visit and you're likely to find staffers and shoppers swapping recommendations. The nine bookstores gathered here are for real book lovers. The booksellers are more likely to gently press into your hands a copy of their favorite collection of Alice Munro stories than the latest Stephenie Meyer novel (though you'll likely find that all of your vampire-book needs will be met as well). You'll discover cozy seating and mellow cafés where you can sit and while away the hours with a stack of good things to read. And, most likely, you'll find yourself making many return visits.
