state of the arts: 9 great exhibitions

by Michael Slenske

  • The New York art market might be in need of its own TARP-like bailout, but as this fall's vibrant exhibition calendar attests, plummeting auction prices haven't put a damper on the bold visions of ambitious gallery and museum directors. Swiss artist Urs Fischer has taken over all three floors of the New Museum (a first for the institution); MoMA welcomes retrospectives from the mind-bending Gabriel Orozco and Tim Burton (yes, that Tim Burton); and David Hockney returns to PaceWildenstein with a refreshingly new series of bucolic paintings. This season, there are plenty of reasons to be cheerful about the art world—even if you aren't taking home anything more than a book from the gift shop.
