This spring, the NCAA Tournament East Regional is coming to Madison Square Garden—the first time the arena will host games in the Big Dance since 1961.

Leading up to that spectacle, there will be plenty of worthwhile college basketball events in New York City, especially at the city's two major arenas: MSG and Brooklyn's Barclays Center. For hoops junkies, fans looking to scout their brackets far in advance and the just plain curious, we've chosen 12 of the best. (Preseason rankings are from the ESPN/USA Today poll.)

We also love all of NYC's local squads, so links to their schedules are stationed at the bottom of this page.

1.
Maryland vs. No. 19 Connecticut
When:
November 8
Where: Barclays Center
Tickets: ticketmaster.com

2.
Coaches vs. Cancer, with host teams No. 2 Michigan State, Oklahoma, Seton Hall and Virginia Tech

When: November 22–23
Where: Barclays Center
Tickets: ticketmaster.com

3.
NIT Season Tip-Off Semifinals and Finals, potentially including No. 4 Duke and No. 5 Arizona
When:
November 27 and 29
Where: Madison Square Garden
Tickets: ticketmaster.com
Note that the preseason NIT is a single-elimination tournament with early rounds at campus sites. So if Duke or Arizona gets knocked out before the semifinals, you won't see them at MSG.

December 1
Where: Barclays Center
Tickets: ticketmaster.com

5.

Syracuse isn't a part of the new Big East, but their massive NYC alumni base still gets to see them visit St. John's at MSG.

The locals
Here are schedule links for the college teams that play in New York City:

Columbia: Morningside Heights' Ivy Leaguers have a smart-alecky pep band, and their conference sometimes produces postseason Cinderella stories (notably Cornell in 2010 and Harvard last season).
Fordham: This Atlantic 10 team draws big crowds at historic Rose Hill Gym, the second-oldest on-campus arena in Division I.
Long Island University (LIU): Julian Boyd is hurt again, but the Blackbirds will try to keep their NEC dynasty alive.
Manhattan: The Jaspers face MAAC rivals in Riverdale.
New York University: The Division III [Fightin'] Violets' pep band cranks out rock-funk covers.
St. Francis (NY): LIU's NEC rivals play at a welcoming, intimate home where fans can watch the game from just a few feet away.
St. John's: The Red Storm, when they're not at the Garden, play in a sterling on-campus arena.
Wagner: Staten Island's veteran team is a preseason favorite in the NEC.
