Biking is bigger than ever, especially in New York City. Since 2000, the number of cyclists in the five boroughs has more than doubled; since 2006, the City has installed more than 250 miles of bike lanes, for a total of about 700. And this summer, NYC will introduce a Bike Share program offering 10,000 bikes at more than 600 stations, available to borrow 24/7 for short rides in exchange for a modest fee.

Bike Month (May) is the perfect time to celebrate these welcome trends and the benefits of two-wheeled travel. In its honor, the City plans to launch a campaign focused on the five cardinal bike-safety rules: Stop at red lights and stop signs; yield to pedestrians; ride with traffic; stay off the sidewalk; and use lights at night. Be on the lookout for ads throughout the five boroughs.

Whether you're an expert cyclist or a novice, there's no shortage of ways to get in gear during May. For details about the month's pedal-powered events, read on.
