The United States women's national soccer team captivated the nation with a thrilling run to its third World Cup championship—the most of any team. So it's only fitting that the players are getting a proper welcome to New York City: a ticker-tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes at 11am on Friday, July 10. This marks the first time a women's sports team has received a New York City ticker-tape parade, making it an especially historic occasion. Get downtown early for a prime viewing spot.

The Canyon of Heroes refers to the stretch of Broadway between the Battery and City Hall. The thoroughfare has a long history as the place where New Yorkers fete important figures. The Downtown Alliance has a very thorough rundown, but here's the long and short of it: NYC's first official ticker-tape parade was for returning World War I veterans (previous paper-throwing parades had occurred, including a spontaneous one in 1886 for the dedication of the Statue of Liberty), and in 1924 US Olympians became the first athletes to get one. Charles Lindbergh was showered with ticker tape in 1927 after crossing the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart received the same honor a year later for her record flight and Apollo 11 astronauts got their due after the 1969 moon landing, to name but a few of the occasions. The tradition has continued to the present—most recently for the New York Giants after their Super Bowl win in 2012—and you can see names of some of those who have been honored engraved in the sidewalk along the route.

By the way, if you want to see great female athletes in action, you have many area options. Soccer team Sky Blue FC, featuring national team member Kelley O'Hara, plays nearby in New Jersey. Within the City limits, the New York Liberty—with stars like Olympic gold medalist Tina Charles—take on WNBA opponents at Madison Square Garden; Gotham Girls Roller Derby is a fast-paced, hard-hitting league that may be the best of its kind in the world; and the US Open brings top tennis players to Queens.

But first go salute America's champions, the most successful Women's World Cup team of all time.
