Even with years to go before they're old enough to hit the weight room at the local gym, kids can drop into these fitness classes with an entertaining take on exercise.
At Karma Kids Yoga in the West Village, children practice poses alongside their favorite doll, and glow-in-the-dark pajama classes are a standard affair. Kids rack up points as they complete a mission packed with fun obstacles and zones like a rock wall, ball pit and yoga space. Drop-in Fitness Blasts range from one to two hours and can be booked online.
For an alternative workout, New York Capoeira Center introduces kids to this Brazilian form of martial arts. Instructors lead kids as young as 4 as they cartwheel and kick to music. If soaring through the air is more their style, Brooklyn's Streb Lab for Action Mechanics children's (SLAM) programs are guaranteed to impress. Dance, box, practice circus stunts and more during Kid Action sessions ($26 for a drop-in class) or swing on the trapeze while picking up a few aerial tricks during Kids Fly ($33 per class).
Children 5 years and older make the cut for open climbing sessions at Brooklyn Boulders. Newcomers to the sport can also pick up the basics during the center's "Learn the Ropes" program and practice without the crowds during family hours from 8am to 11am on weekends.
