Experience everything Dutch—cuisine, culture, architecture, arts and more—during NY400 Week (Tuesday, September 8, to Sunday, September 13). Commemorating the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's arrival in New York Harbor, NY400 Week is the weeklong, citywide celebration of 400 years of friendship between New York City and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Visit a Dutch village, rent a bike for free, take in a sailing race, dance against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline and so much more—all while commemorating the two countries' inextricably linked heritage and culture.

Finally, the week culminates on Sunday, September 13, with NY Harbor Day, which promises even more celebrations on both land and water, along six scenic waterfront sites that are easily accessible by bike, subway, foot, ferry and water taxi.

New Amsterdam Village
(Friday, September 4–Sunday, September 13, 11am–7pm)
Bowling Green (Broadway at Beaver St.)
Amid traditional Dutch canal houses, a windmill and an outdoor podium, learn about and experience Dutch crafts, such as making wooden shoes, Delft blue painting and glassblowing. In addition, sample traditional foods like cheese, beer, herring and "dollar" pancakes, and purchase Dutch flower bulbs and cut flowers.

NY400 Welcoming Ceremony
(Tuesday, September 8, 8:30am)
Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
Be there for the start of it all: join the kick-off event for NY400 Week at 9:15am on the Hudson River. Expect a parade of US and Dutch frigates, NATO ally fleets, Flying Dutchman racers and replicas of historic Dutch ships to fill the harbor in honor of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage to New York. A 21-gun salute and the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy will provide on-shore accompaniment to the official ceremony from the USS Intrepid. All are welcome to enjoy this free event.

Bike NYC on a Free Dutch Bike
(Tuesday, September 8–Saturday, September 12, 11am–7pm)
Bowling Green (Broadway at Beaver St.)
Bright orange NY400 bicycles will be available for free to the public on a limited basis during the course of NY400 Week. Get around town the typical Dutch way, and be sure to ride your Dutch bike to NY400 Week events.

Flying Dutchman Sailing Races
(Tuesday, September 8, 11am–5pm; Wednesday, September 9–Thursday, September 10, 10am–5pm; Saturday, September 12, 10am–2pm & 3–4pm)
New York Harbor
Fifty-six Flying Dutchman–class sailboats representing 10 countries will compete in championship races. The New Amsterdam Championships will be held Tuesday through Thursday and the Centennial World Championships on Saturday and Sunday. Sailing courses will vary depending on wind conditions; check ny400.org for daily updates.

Replica of the Half Moon
(Wednesday, September 9, 11am–3pm)
The Battery
Every year, this replica of Henry Hudson's Halve Maen retraces the ship's original 1609 voyage—which laid the foundation for the New Netherland colony and modern-day New York City. Come see the ship's exterior and meet its captain and crew. 

Replica of the Onrust
(Wednesday, September 9–Sunday, September 13, 10am–5pm)
Pier 84, Hudson River Park
The Onrust was the first trading and exploration vessel the Dutch built in America, constructed in 1614 by Captain Adriaen Block and his crew after their original ship burned. Volunteers will demonstrate how the crew survived by using local resources, shipbuilding skills and productive working relationships with Native Americans.

Unveiling of the New Amsterdam Plein & Pavilion
(Wednesday, September 9, 11am–noon)
The Battery
Experience the unveiling of the New Amsterdam Plein & Pavilion, a gift from the Dutch government to New York City, as part of the yearlong NY400 celebrations. Designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel of UNStudio (known for his work on the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, among others), the 5,000-square-foot plaza will host markets, provide shade and seating and eventually include a food court. After today's ceremony, the Plein & Pavilion will be open to the public from noon to 6pm.

Arrival of the Fleet of Traditional Dutch Barges
(Thursday, September 10–Sunday, September 13)
Yankee Pier, Governors Island
Seventeen leeboard vessels—not much different from the ones Henry Hudson and his crew used to explore New York Harbor—arrive at Yankee Pier on Governors Island. Be on hand for the welcome ceremony, set to begin in the late afternoon (visit ny400.org for more details). Captains and crew are on hand to answer your questions about these historic ships. The boats will be at the pier through Harbor Day.

Streetlab
(Thursday, September 10–Sunday, September 13)
Chelsea Market
Immerse yourself in Dutch counterculture with Streetlab and My Little Underground's pop-up store in Chelsea Market. An exhibition space, shop, studio and auditorium all-in-one, this pop-up store will showcase the work of up and coming Dutch artists as part of the NY400 celebration. From fashion designers and photographers to illustrators and graphic designers, all of these exhibitors will have their works for sale to the public as well as buyers for businesses.

Vermeer's Masterpiece: "The Milkmaid"
(Thursday, September 10–Sunday, November 29; closed Mondays except October 12)
The Metropolitan Museum of Art
In honor of NY400, Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum has loaned Vermeer's most admired work—The Milkmaid—to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is the first time the painting has been in the United States since the 1939 New York World's Fair. Several other paintings by Vermeer and fellow Dutch masters round out the exhibition.

Speed Dating with the Low Countries
(Thursday, September 10, 1–5pm)
Columbia University, Roone Arledge Auditorium, 2920 Broadway (at W. 115th St.)
Learn about Dutch and Flemish culture at this free event, which features lessons in making Belgian chocolates, music from Flanders and the Netherlands, short films from young Dutch filmmakers and an appearance by Russell Shorto, author of The Island at the Center of the World. The event concludes on Friday, September 11, 7:30–9:30pm, at the TimesCenter (242 W. 41st St.).

New Island Festival
(Thursday, September 10, 4–11pm; Friday, September 11–Sunday, September 13, 11am–11pm; Thursday, September 17, 4–11pm; Friday, September 18–Sunday, September 20, 11am–11pm)
Governors Island
Direct from Holland, the New Island Festival sets up stakes on Governors Island September 10–13 and again September 17–20. The festival kicks off the fall with provocative theatre, stunning site-specific performances and dazzling visual arts performed by world-class Dutch artists. Pioneers of Change

Governors Island
Pioneers of Change showcases a modern interpretation of Dutch art and design by leading designers from the fashion, design and architecture world. The exhibit will take place in former officers' houses in Nolan Park on Governors Island and will highlight themes such as repair vs. recycling and creative reuse of discarded building materials, while exploring ideas of space, fresh air, respect, care, silence, slowness and time. Open House: Royal Netherlands Navy and NATO Ships
(Saturday, September 12, 10am–3pm)
Brooklyn Marine Terminal, Piers 7 and 8
Explore royal Netherlands naval frigates and NATO ships—including the Dutch mine sweeper HNLMS Urk—and enjoy live music from the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy at this "open decks open house."

ING presents New Island Festival's DJ Dance Event
(Saturday, September 12, 2 –5pm)
NY Water Taxi Beach, Governors Island
The Manhattan skyline provides the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable day of dancing as a Dutch DJ supplies the tunes. Pre-registration is required; check newislandfestival.com for more details beginning September 6.

New Amsterdam: The Island at the Center of the World
(Sunday, September 13–Sunday, January 3; closed Mondays; 10am–6pm)
South Street Seaport Museum
Come for the opening of this exhibit presented by the National Archives of the Netherlands. Among the items on display are the 1626 letter that notes the purchase of Manhattan for goods worth 60 guilders as well as rare maps, plans and watercolors of New Amsterdam.

NY Harbor Day
(Sunday, September 13)
Citywide
Festivities span six major waterfront sites—The Battery, Battery Park City, Hudson River Park, Governors Island, Brooklyn Bridge Park and Snug Harbor—all linked by free rental bikes and hop-on/hop-off boat service. At each site, food, drink, entertainment and activities will commemorate this special moment in New York City history. Highlights include: a flotilla of modern and historic Dutch and American yachts and sailing vessels, an oyster festival, Harmony on the Hudson (a children's music festival), children's bike clinics at Brooklyn Bridge Plaza, the Brooklyn Flea under the Manhattan Bridge Archway, kayaking, paddleboating and much more.
