There's far more to New York City theater than Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Repertorio Español, founded in 1968, is one of the most active Spanish-speaking theater companies in the United States, bringing the best of Latin American, Spanish and Hispanic-American theater to the City and beyond. The company showcases more than 350 performances of 15 productions each year and is NYC & Company's Culture Spot for the month of September. In honor of this designation, theatergoers who buy one ticket for a Repertorio Español performance can buy a second ticket for $1 throughout the month. Up to four tickets per customer may be purchased for each order (subject to availability), and they must be bought in pairs (one at the regular ticket price, one for $1).

In September, Repertorio Español audiences will fall under the spell of the company's numerous offerings. Ana en el Trópico, a Pulitzer Prize–winning drama by Nilo Cruz, is a gripping production. Set in a Cuban-American cigar factory in Florida in 1929, where factory workers are educated and entertained by a "lector," the play explores literature, love, Cuban culture and the American dream. Other productions include El Quijote, an adaptation of the timeless Miguel de Cervantes novel, and La Gringa, a comedy written by Carmen Rivera. The theater's longest-running play, La Gringa debuted in 1996 as part of ¡Voces Nuevas!, the company's initiative to support rising Hispanic voices. It relates the story of a New Yorker who, on a mission to find her roots, travels to Puerto Rico. Repertorio Español is also performing La Casa de Bernarda Alba, by Federico García Lorca, the legendary Spanish poet and playwright. For those who aren't fluent in Spanish, live English translation is available. For a complete schedule of shows, visit
