New York may be "The City That Never Sleeps," but no one said it couldn't relax. From massages to the latest in laser and facial-enhancement treatments, the spas and salons listed below have thought of every way to soothe and pamper guests. In Midtown, for example, the world-renowned Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon & Spa offers upscale services befitting its prestigious Fifth Avenue address, while Nickel Spa in the Meatpacking District gears its services to men who may not be used to the spa experience. Read on for more details about some of our favorite places to unwind.
Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon & Spa
691 Fifth Ave., 212-546-0200
Four floors of bliss—including, for example, manicures, pedicures, facials, makeup, massages, hairstyling and brow shaping—await at this storied Fifth Avenue day spa. Open since 1910, the spot has a proud tradition of service and sophistication, but also makes sure to stay on the cutting edge. Amenities include facial cosmetic treatments with Botox, Restylane and Juvéderm.
Graceful Services, Inc.
1095 Second Ave., 2nd fl., 212-593-9904
This no-frills eastside spa, open seven days a week, offers a wide variety of services. However, it's really made a name for itself as a wonderful place to get a rubdown, including a four-hand session (two therapists) and a thumb and neck massage perfect for office workers who spend their days hunched over computers. Also on offer: house calls and couple's massages.
Metamorphosis Day Spa
127 E. 56th St., 5th fl., 212-751-6051
Why should girls have all the spa fun? While this Midtown day spa offers the latest in spa service trends favored by women—using everything from laser technology to oxygen infusion to plant stem cells from a rare Swiss apple—it also offers a menu of specialized treatments that are just for men. The "Metrosexual Makeover Package," for example, includes a facial, a hot stone massage, a scalp massage, and a paraffin hand treatment.
Nickel Spa
77 Eighth Ave., 212-242-3203
Nickel Spa aspires to provide "serious skincare for men." Those who want to be pampered but are disheartened by a spa marketplace that caters mainly to women will be pleased by this facility, whose management prides itself on a straightforward approach and treatments that help men rev up for and recover from sports, parties and travel. Services offered in the sleek, space-age spot include massages, facials, waxing, laser hair removal and much more—including, ahem, manicures.
Oasis Day Spa
1 Park Ave., 212-254-7722
Husband-and-wife duo Bruce and Marti Schoenberg founded Oasis Day Spa in 1998. Named among New York's best by Vogue, Allure and New York magazine, this facility offers massages, facials, scrubs, waxing and a variety of spa packages, as well as wellness programs and options for large parties. Oasis Day Spa has two Manhattan locations, welcoming both women and men to step in and start relaxing. A Carmine Fischetti hair salon is also at the 1 Park Avenue post.
Sense, A Rosewood Spa at The Carlyle
35 E. 76th St., 212-744-1600
This intimate, six-room refuge shares The Carlyle hotel's Art Deco aesthetic—and provides an immersive calm far beyond the conventional spa experience. One room features a Kohler DTV shower, which combines water, light, sound and steam to create a moment as cinematic as it is cleansing. Sense's trademark offering is the Sense Spa Journey, a soothing, three-hour session that exceeds its ambitious name: scrubbing, exfoliating, massaging and facial-ing participants into refreshed bliss.
YeloSpa
315 W. 57th St., 212-245-8235
YeloSpa helps urbanites escape the pressures of modern life through a menu of spa and wellness treatments. Upon arriving, guests are surrounded by a peaceful color scheme inspired by the garments of Tibetan monks. They're invited to sip artisanal tea, refresh with a scented hot towel and enter a cocoon-like treatment room called the "YeloCab." Service options are boundless, from reflexology to nap sessions in a zero-gravity "YeloChair" to Swedish massage to a "Mini Glow Facial."
