Where to Watch: Yankees in the World Series
by Jonathan Zeller , 10/26/2009
The Yankees just vanquished the Angels to win their 40th American League pennant. If you're not one of the lucky few who will be at the games themselves as the team pursues its 27th World Series title, there are plenty of ways to get in on the action. The nycgo.com sports desk is here to help with a roundup of places where you can join your fellow Yankees (or, perish the thought, Phillies) fans to watch the games, grab some drinks or garner shiny new World Series apparel.
A word to the wise, though—many of these hangouts are likely to be packed for the games, so arrive early or even call ahead to make sure there's room for you.
Brother Jimmy's BBQ (citywide)—The Yankees serve Brother Jimmy's BBQ at their games; so close your eyes here and, between the cheering fans and Carolina pulled pork, your eardrums and taste buds might be fooled into thinking you're at the ballpark.
Yankee Tavern (Bronx)—Just steps from Yankee Stadium itself, this is the place to go if you want to be really close to the action. The way A-Rod's hitting, you might still catch a home run.
Blondies Sports (Upper West Side)—Blondies creates a detailed, fun-filled Yankees experience. Recent evenings have included sing-alongs to Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" between innings and "Enter Sandman" when Mariano Rivera comes out of the bullpen.
Good for Families
Mickey Mantle's Restaurant & Sports Bar (Midtown West)—Management calls this memorabilia-jammed eatery "the second-best place" to watch a Yankees game.
Dave & Buster's (Times Square)—If your youngsters (or you) are easily distracted, or if the game's a blowout, there's nothing like playing Skee-ball during the seventh-inning stretch.
ESPN Zone (Times Square)—This sports mega-complex features bright lights, big screens and even arcade games.
Wogies Bar & Grill (West Village)—NYC's Phillies phaithful feel welcome within these walls, where they munch on cheesesteak and cheer for their team.
Modell's Sporting Goods (citywide)—Satisfy your need for an American League champions T-shirt, a traditional navy blue cap or any other pro-Yankees sartorial statement.
Those looking to support the Bronx Bombers and a good cause can find co-branded NYPD/FDNY/Yankees shirts at Modell's. One dollar from each shirt sold will go to the New York City Police Foundation and the FDNY Foundation.
