  • Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum
After an extensive three-year renovation, the Cooper Hewitt, National Design Museum reopens on December 12 as the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Dedicated to showcasing design in all disciplines, the museum is housed inside Andrew Carnegie's former 64-room mansion and is itself a stunning example of esteemed architecture with its sweeping staircase, wood-paneled rooms and iron grillwork. As part of its expansion, the museum honors Carnegie with a small mini-golf green on the third floor (never before opened to the public) where he liked to practice his putts. The museum is also expanding its gallery space. Inaugural exhibitions will draw on the museum's storied past and showcase the history and future of design. One in particular, the Hewitt Sisters Collect, highlights the collection of the institution's founders Sarah and Eleanor Hewitt. Its permanent holdings are worth seeing, too, with some 200,000 objects spanning 30 centuries.
