South African–born playwright Athol Fugard’s now-classic 1982 play about the wounds inflicted by apartheid was once banned in his home country. Today, it is one of the nation’s most famous exports. Through the eyes of and interactions between white 17-year-old Hally (“Master Harold”) and his lifelong black caretakers, Sam and Willie, Fugard shows the cancerous impact of racism and division on all the lives it touches. Fugard will direct this special restaging, which though set in 1950, holds lessons about the devastating emotional cost of racism in the present day.
