Fort Tilden Beach

Beach 169th St at the Atlantic Ocean
Queens, NY

Rockaway Beach resident Patti Smith has been doing her share to keep the spotlight on the beachfront neighborhood that was devastated by Hurricane Sandy almost two years ago. To mark the reopening of Fort Tilden, an army installation now maintained by the National Park Service, she and MoMA PS1 are collaborating on a summer-long free public arts festival. Exhibits at Fort Tilden include a large-scale site-specific installation by Smith herself, as well as sculptures by Argentinean artist Adrián Villar Rojas and Janet Cardiff's Forty Piece Motet, a sound installation on loan from the MoMA collection; there will also be a group exhibition at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. The festival kicks off on June 29 with "Rockaway! Opening Day," a full day of art, sand, surf, food and fun, capped by a free concert by, yes, Patti Smith. For more information, visit
