Just as Wicked humanized Oz’s witches, The Woodsman imagines the untold life story of the Tin Man, long before he met Dorothy. Filled with moody music and visual imagery, this production employs beautifully handmade puppets, each painstakingly crafted. James Ortiz designed the sets and puppets, wrote the script, co-directed and stars as the titular woodsman Nick Chopper, who makes the mistake of falling in love with the wrong woman. Chopper’s transformation from lovelorn human to scrap heap—a jealous witch is involved—is beautifully depicted in a staging that is a feast for the eyes, ears and the heart.
