The Pavilion Market Café
20 Union Sq. West, 212-677-7818, Union Square, Manhattan
Local sourcing of ingredients can't get any closer than the Pavilion, a new bistro in the heart of the Union Square farmers' market. The neoclassical colonnade on the north side of Union Square Park lay dormant for years. Now Simon Oren (Marseille, Nice Matin) has brought it to life for the season, with 200 indoor-outdoor seats. Outdoors, there's no mistaking where you are, but indoors evokes the Luxembourg Gardens, lush with foliage, flowers and rattan furnishings. Couples escaping the sun sit at the bar and sip beer as golden as marigolds while families unwind at tables, exploring an American-Mediterranean menu of sandwiches (tuna steak with wasabi coleslaw), salads, pasta (pappardelle with pesto), hanger steak and seafood. Lunch and dinner menus are similar, and at brunch you'll see more bakery and organic egg items.
