    On the Bowery is an Italian cafe from chef-with-a-golden-touch Andrew Carmellini, in collaboration with partners Josh Pickard and Luke Ostrom (Lafayette, The Dutch, Locanda Verde). Taavo Somer (Freemans) designed the bi-level corner space to have a woodsy, rustic feel, maintaining the same low-key, groovy vibe as when it was Peels. The stuff-of-dreams roast beef sandwich with Italian peppers, provolone and arugula is a good reason to hit it for lunch before or after visiting the nearby New Museum. Pastas are made fresh—a telling, satisfying detail when chewing al dente rigatoni enveloped in light tomato sauce, eggplant, shredded ricotta salata, basil and melting mozzarella. During the day the space is popular with families and those who work in the neighborhood; at night a younger, stylish crowd trades bites of prosciutto with sweet melon for gutsy bucatini with lamb amatriciana.
