Babu Ji touts its regional Indian menu as street food, but there is real artistry to Jessi Singh's spinach-and-onion fritters and black lentil daal with ginger and garlic. He and his wife, Jennifer, got their start running restaurants in Australia. In 2015 the couple won over an Alphabet City audience as soon as locals got a taste of Singh's luscious butter chicken and lamb curry. Reservations are recommended—as is the chef's tasting menu, in order to have the full experience. Bollywood movies are projected on a white wall and a stuffed peacock lords over the self-serve beer fridge, adding a sense of fun. The windowed corner space has adopted the no-tipping trend, tacking on an administrative fee (16%) instead.
