Chez Sardine, an intimate boîte on a cute West Village block, is near its sister restaurant Fedora and overseen by the same Montreal-trained chef, Mehdi Brunet-Benkritly. It's part of Gabriel Stulman's Little Wisco restaurant group (which also includes Joseph Leonard, Jeffrey's Grocery and Perla) but stands apart for its Japanese influences. The windowed, 20-seat space is a combination sushi bar/tavern, adorned with fish images and a giant portrait of Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita's character in The Karate Kid). If you like oysters, be sure to get them here, brightened with apple and chive oil. Pork and unagi hand rolls, caviar and butter toast, foie gras and smoked cheddar grilled cheese, and breakfast pancakes are other highlights. The more daring should take advantage of miso-maple salmon head.
