Lanza's, open since 1904, is named for founder Michael Lanza (not singer Mario Lanza), whose portrait hangs on the wall. Despite its vintage surroundings and traditional Italian menu, the restaurant makes a play for keeping up with the times, offering whole-wheat pasta and bread as well as gluten-free pasta to the health-conscious. A scene from Woody Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery takes place here, and if you prod the staff for current star sightings, you might hear about Robert De Niro (sitting in the back, avoiding attention) or Mariah Carey calling ahead for linguine with white clam sauce and sending her limo driver in to fetch it.
