Lupulo, which means "hops" in Portuguese, has a remarkable beer list, but it's far more than a brewpub. The sophisticated Chelsea tavern just south of Herald Square has the benefit of George Mendes in the kitchen, who first explored his Portuguese heritage at the Michelin-starred Aldea. His menu at Lupulo has bold and delicious choices like creamy fava beans mixed with coins of blood sausage and earthy mushrooms, as well as crowd-pleasing butterflied chicken that's as moist as you've ever had. The nautical ropes that hang down between tables signal fish is the way to go here, and indeed the restaurant's seafood is a delight—think fabulous salt cod croquettes, tender octopus with rice and green olives and grilled whole sardines with blistered pepper salad. Portugal is also known for its great breads and custard-y pastéis de nata; the versions here are as good as they  get.
