David Chang's Momofuku empire began to conquer the East Village food scene in 2004 and has now advanced to Midtown's Chambers Hotel. The spare, downstairs dining room has the feel of a butter-hued big top, with a tented ceiling and a thrilling buzz around the cross-shaped communal table. The food is creative Vietnamese-French with an emphasis on sustainable beef, pork and poultry dishes, such as roasted chicken with mushrooms, green papaya and peanuts, and rice noodles with spicy pork and sawleaf herb (in the cilantro/coriander family). The mezzanine level offers a full-fledged bar and separate dessert shop, Milk Bar (open 9am to 5pm daily), serving treats like their trademarked soft-serve cereal-milk ice cream, compost cookies and candy-bar pie.
