  • Astoria is a shining example of a harmonious united nations and has long been a gold mine for chowhounds. Just about every ethnic cuisine imaginable is on hand, thanks to a broad mix of industrious immigrants. Most famous for its large Greek and Italian communities, northwestern Queens also embraces expats from Central America, South America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. This different world is easily reached from Midtown Manhattan, and it's a shame that the man it was named for—America's first multimillionaire, John Jacob Astor—never stepped foot in it. Today, he might be amused by the neighborhood's Kaufman Astoria Studios, a beehive of film and television production, as well as its fine, new commissary, The Astor Room. For those with more limited budgets, we have five great suggestions in our slideshow.
