Brazil may be best known for sexy samba music and barely there bikinis, but thanks to global giants such as H. Stern, it also has a thriving luxury jewelry industry. One of its most elegant players is Jack Vartanian, who is renowned in his homeland but still under-the-radar stateside. Since 2008, Vartanian has maintained a quiet presence on Manhattan's Upper East Side in a jewel box of a boutique in the heart of Madison Avenue's five-star retail row. Designed by architect and fellow Brazilian Arthur Casas, the shop stocks Vartanian's eclectic array of rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets. The jeweler might be based in São Paulo, but Brazil's jungles and wildlife inspire some of his pieces; items are frequently modeled after animals or insects.
