  • This past fall Broadway took its share of hits, rather than producing them. Good reviews were few and far between, and many shows like Big Fish, First Date, Soul Doctor and A Time To Kill ended up on the chopping block. But 2014 is a new year, with plenty of brand-new productions ready to throw their hats in the ring. Doing just that, America's most famous fictitious boxer, Rocky Balboa, will make his singing and dancing debut in the musical Rocky, brought here after a successful run in Hamburg, Germany. On the other end of the cultural spectrum, the East German transgender punk rocker Hedwig, of the cult 1990s musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, will bring her band to the Great White Way for the first time, with Neil Patrick Harris donning the iconic blonde wig. And falling somewhere in the middle are the big-budget Broadway premiere of Disney's 1992 animated film Aladdin and the glitzy show-biz satire Bullets Over Broadway, the first Woody Allen film to be made into a Broadway musical. Many red carpet regulars will also be making their Broadway debuts this winter and spring; the newbies include Bryan Cranston, fresh off the epic Breaking Bad finale, Michelle Williams, Debra Messing, Zach Braff, Chris O'Dowd and James Franco. To balance out the rookies, cherished Broadway divas like Idina Menzel, Kelli O'Hara and Sutton Foster will return to star in new musicals. Here are the 16 shows that will be shaking up the Broadway scene this spring.
