  • Mothers and Sons
After appearing as the opera singer Maria Callas in the 2011 revival of Terrence McNally's play Master Class, celebrated actress Tyne Daly is coming back to Broadway in Mothers and Sons, a new work by the playwright. This time she'll take on the role of Katharine, a mother whose son Andre died of AIDS 20 years earlier. After finding Andre's diary, she decides to pay Cal, his partner at the time of his death, a surprise visit at his apartment in New York City. Cal is now in a same-sex marriage and has a young son—the family experience that wouldn't have been possible when he was dating Andre in the late '80s. The story is a follow-up to McNally's 1990 PBS teleplay Andre's Mother, which ended with Andre's funeral and a tense interaction between Katharine and Cal, since she never really accepted her son and his relationship with the young writer. Mothers and Sons exemplifies how far gay rights have come since Andre's Mother premiered, thanks in no small part to artists like McNally, who throughout his 40-plus-year career has addressed issues affecting the gay community with stage, film and TV pieces defined by their humor and honesty. This play should be no different.
Golden Theatre, 252 W. 45th St. Previews start February 23; opens March 24.
