Brokeback Mountain and Dawson's Creek star Michelle Williams has some big bowler hats to fill when she takes on the role of Sally Bowles in the fourth Broadway revival of John Kander and Fred Ebb's 1966 musical Cabaret, set in 1930s-era Germany. The 1972 film version won Liza Minnelli an Oscar for playing the saucy, struggling Berlin showgirl, and the late Natasha Richardson's interpretation earned her a Tony in the 1998 revival. Williams proved she could play the part of a singing, dancing sex kitten in her 2011 Oscar-nominated turn as Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn, and if she needs any help, much of the same team from the hit 1998 revival will be on hand to guide her along the way. Alan Cumming is stepping back into his career-defining role as the Kit Kat Club's gender-bending emcee, joined by other vets such as co-director/choreographer Rob Marshall, costume designer William Ivey Long and director Sam Mendes. Support also comes from another key alum: Ms. Minnelli has already promised she will see the show and has given Williams her blessing.
Studio 54, 254 W. 54th St. Previews start March 21; opens April 24.
