Hedwig and the Angry Inch
He'd hit on her, but boy, would he be in for a big surprise—or small, depending on how you look at it. This is what would happen if Barney Stinson, the lovable douche bag Neil Patrick Harris plays on the long-running CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother, were to ever meet Hedwig, the leggy, feathered blonde punk rock singer Harris will play on Broadway this spring. You see, Hedwig was born Hansel, but there was a mistake during his sex change, and an inch, dubbed her "angry inch," of manhood was left intact. The character is the creation of John Cameron Mitchell, performance artist–turned–indie auteur, who played her Off-Broadway in 1998 and in the 2001 film version, becoming a cult figure in the downtown art scene as a result. But this is the first time Hedwig will be performing uptown, on Broadway, with a household name in the role. Heading up much more than a campy drag show, Hedwig will be joined by her backing band, a group of Korean-born Army wives she met in Kansas after moving to America with her husband (the latter promptly left her for another man). The group plays catchy, country-inspired glam-rock songs, written by Stephen Trask, in run-down diners and dive bars as Hedwig recounts her life story. And quite a story it is.
