  • PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature
    April 28–May 4
The 10th annual PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature recognizes writers who have taken risks to challenge the status quo. Among the participants are Boris Akunin, who has spoken up against authoritarian rule in Russia, and Czech writer Ivan Klíma, whose works were banned under Communist rule. Other events look at state surveillance practices, both in today's world and in generations past, and festival founder and chairman Salman Rushdie and scholar Timothy Garton Ash will engage in a conversation on freedom of speech. In all, more than 100 writers from 30 countries will take part.
