Uncle Sam's birthday dominates any discussion of July's main events in New York City. And this is hardly a town to take Independence Day lightly, starting with the serious competition at Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island, continuing with traditional family-style celebrations at Historic Richmond Town in Staten Island and finishing with a big bang high above the East River at the annual Macy's fireworks extravaganza. Not just a fireworks finale, "Stars and Stripes Forever" also foretokens the month's fiesta of free outdoor music. The New York Philharmonic plays parks in all five boroughs; the Metropolitan Opera matches its Lincoln Center neighbor with a parks recital series of its own; SummerStage kicks into high gear, as does Celebrate Brooklyn!; Broadway stars bring it in Bryant Park; and MoMA opens its doors for its Summergarden concert series. What's more, big-time arts troupes visit Lincoln Center for an annual summer festival; big-time European football squads meet up at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium for some post–World Cup play; and big-time spiders (sadly, not from Mars) invade the American Museum of Natural History.
