Something about June brings out New York City's do-it-yourself spirit. Alfresco dance parties like MoMA PS1 Warm Up and Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing give folks a chance to show off their moves, and Make Music New York gives them a chance to show off their grooves. Pride Week (more like Pride Month) affords a number of opportunities to hit the streets and celebrate (and there has been plenty to celebrate of late). Meanwhile, down by the seashore, everyone's invited to don body paint and foam fishtails and join Coney Island's raucous Mermaid Parade. The plein air exhibition Figment, on Governors Island, encourages attendees to get their hands dirty and interact with the artworks, and there's no way not to get your hands messy at the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party. As an antidote to brisket-and-rib overdose, you can get some laps in at the City's outdoor public pools, burn rubber at the Skyscraper Harlem Cycling Classic or mix fine art with pedestrian aerobics by walking the length of the Museum Mile Festival. After all that activity, we recommend heading over to the Delacorte Theater for Shakespeare in the Park, so you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
