The first Broadway revival of American journalist and playwright Sophie Treadwell's scandalous 1928 drama Machinal will star award-winning British actress Rebecca Hall. The play relates the story of Ruth Snyder, a Queens housewife who murdered her husband in 1927 with the help of her lover and was subsequently executed by electrocution in 1928. In a production directed by Lyndsey Turner, Hall will play the character here called Young Woman, a court stenographer who cheats on her husband and then, not being able to stand the thought of returning to married life, plots his murder. This will be Hall's Broadway debut, although this won't be her first time on a New York stage. She starred in The Cherry Orchard and The Winter's Tale as part of Sam Mendes' Bridge Project at BAM in 2009.
American Airlines Theatre, 227 W. 42nd St. Previews start December 20; opens January 16, 2014.
