The Glass Menagerie
The Glass Menagerie is a reflection on human fragility that is also one of Tennessee Williams’s most difficult plays to stage. It's especially tricky to perfect the balance between its four characters: the delusional Southern belle, Amanda Wingfield; her shy daughter, Laura, and restless son, Tom; and the charming gentleman caller, Jim O’Connor. The play was last attempted on Broadway in 2005, with little success. But judging from the reviews of this revival's debut in Cambridge, Massachusetts, last year, John Tiffany, the Tony-winning director of Once, has found the right combination for his innovative production: Tony winner Cherry Jones as Amanda; Star Trek standout Zachary Quinto as Tom; theater vet Celia Keenan-Bolger as Laura; and TV and Broadway regular Brian J. Smith as Jim. Expect to be shattered at the end of this family's tragic tale.
Booth Theatre, 222 W. 45th St. Previews start September 5; opens September 26.
