  • Chaplin
This musical about the life of the talented-but-troubled Charlie Chaplin debuted at the La Jolla Playhouse to not-so-great reviews. But after a few changes by the creative team—director and choreographer Wayne Carlyle, composer Christopher Curtis and book writer Thomas Meehan—the silent-film star (an actor playing him, anyway) is set to make his musical debut on Broadway this fall. Newcomer Rob McClure, who's been hard at work honing his slapstick, tightrope walking and acrobatic skills, takes on the title role. Christiane Noll plays Chaplin's unfit mother, and Erin Mackey stars as Oona O'Neill, Chaplin's fourth and final wife. Considering the comedian's dramatic life—growing up poor and unstable; a tumultuous career bogged down by marriages to much-younger actresses and unplanned pregnancies followed by difficult divorces—the musical is sure to be filled with Chaplin's own winning combination of pathos and humor.
The Barrymore Theatre, 243 W. 47th St. Previews playing now; opens on September 12.
