This dark comedy is the long-awaited Broadway debut of exciting, prolific playwright Craig Wright. The show pits Hollywood-comedy sweetheart Paul Rudd against the off-kilter Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon. Adding to Broadway's growing pantheon of religious commentary—The Book of Mormon, Doubt, Sister Act—the new play is about a fundamentalist couple (Rudd and Kate Arrington, Shannon's real-life wife) who move to Florida with ambitions to start up a chain of religious-themed motels. Their lives and beliefs are brought into question by their neighbor—a deeply troubled former astrophysicist (Shannon)—and a meddling exterminator played by television legend Ed Asner in his first appearance on Broadway in nearly a quarter century. With a team like this, everyone, religious or not, will be saying Grace by the end of the season.
Cort Theatre, 138 W. 48th St. Previews begin on September 13; opens on October 4.
