  • It's no secret that New York City is a foodie's paradise, but some of the best edible finds aren't solely found on the menus at area restaurants—they're at the City's 53 Greenmarkets throughout the five boroughs—many of which operate year-round. These urban stalls offer the simple goodness of whole fresh foods as well as prepared artisanal products like wasabi pickles, flavored bitters and homemade chutneys. And locavores can rest assured knowing that all stands operate under a strict set of guidelines to ensure full traceability of the production process. No goods come from farther than 120 miles south, 170 miles east and west and 250 miles north of New York City.

But it's not just the product variety and quality (and fantastic people-watching) that set these markets apart—it's also the farmers, bakers and chefs who make it all happen. Here, dedicated purveyors share the stories behind their stands and offer suggestions for the one item you simply can't leave the market without. Read on for the very best of NYC's Greenmarket scene.
