Printed Matter isn't your average bookstore. Instead, expect to find beautiful limited-edition publications, handcrafted hardcovers and rare items, all of them focused on art. Boasting more than 20,000 works, the nonprofit bookstore stocks hard-to-find tomes, including art and photo titles, as well as books and 'zines. Head to the Chelsea bookstore/gallery if you're looking for "publications made by artists," in a broad range of designs and mediums. You'll find a rare intact copy of Keith Haring's Fun Book!!, a collection of a dozen black-and-white drawings meant to be colored by children, and an original copy of the first issue of famed San Francisco punk 'zine Search and Destroy from 1977. While the rare collectables can run you a couple hundred dollars, many of the products sold here are affordable. You could find a thought-provoking pamphlet of poetry and an early-'80s periodical about New York City for under $10 each.
