    109 S. 6th St., 718-599-9109, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Walking or biking across the Williamsburg Bridge is a grittier experience than crossing the more picturesque Brooklyn span, but the skyline views from it are just as spectacular—and it leads to an outstanding English tavern on the Brooklyn side of the East River. No dartboards or video games here, but you will find viewing parties for Manchester United games. There's good beer on draft and classic, well-prepared pub food such as Guinness beef stew, cottage pie and fish-and-chips. The lofty, varnished-wood space is appointed with contemporary art and plenty of seating—it's a great place for a group to gather since it's rarely too crowded or too loud to hear a joke. Look for steep happy-hour discounts on drinks and bar food and a kitchen that stays open until midnight.
