  • Museum of Arts and Design
The Museum of Arts and Design is devoted to exploring the intersection of art, craft and design, and the results are often surprising. Take, for example, current exhibition The Art of Scent 1889–2012, an unusual installation dedicated to olfactory art that runs through February 24, 2013. It features such scents as Ernest Beaux's Chanel N°5 and Bernard Olivier Cresp's Angel, and traces evolutionary and design developments in the world of fragrances. Another notable collection, Doris Duke's Shangri La: Architecture, Landscape, and Islamic Art, on view through February 17, 2013, features some 3,500 objects from the former home of philanthropist and art collector Doris Duke, who acquired Islamic art for 60 years. See ceramics, jewelry, tile-paneled walls and other objects from Asia and Africa (some dating back to the early first millennium BC) alongside new works by contemporary Islamic artists. Upcoming exhibitions include After the Museum (March 5–May 26, 2013), which explores the process behind design and the role that cultural organizations have in influencing the design world, and Against the Grain (March 19–June 16, 2013)a collection of modern woodwork designs. If you visit during Open Studio hours, you'll get a chance to speak with artists and learn how they create and conceptualize their work.
