New York City Gardens
Soak up some culture, along with some vitamin D, at the five boroughs' public gardens. In addition to lush landscapes, each offers a variety of individual attractions. In the Bronx, the New York Botanical Garden examines the role of plants in medicine and cosmetics around the world with its installation Wild Medicine. Another seasonal showcase, Four Seasons, consists of four 15-foot-high sculptures composed of flowers, fruit and fungi that represent the four seasons. There are hundreds of plants in bloom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and several new varieties joining the garden this summer. From the unusual (hairy bracken fern) to the endangered (pink lady's-slipper), these colorful examples of vegetation are the subject of the photographic exhibition Locally Sourced: Rare Plants, Rare Places. Staten Island's Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, Wave Hill in the Bronx and Queens Botanical Garden also provide the opportunity to escape to a verdant paradise, right here in the City.
