  • Apollo Theater
Harlem's famous Apollo Theater is important not only because it honors and promotes the contributions of African-American performers but also because it is an embodiment of progress: the building was originally a burlesque theater that did not allow black patrons. Visit for Amateur Night (Wednesdays), the showcase for numerous legends—including Ella Fitzgerald and Jimi Hendrix—in their early careers or take a historical tour of the building. Winter 2013–2014 programming highlights include Regeneration Night, a dance-and-music performance celebrating Kwanzaa; Ellington at Christmas, featuring the jazz great's interpretation of The Nutcracker Suite; and a holiday version of Amateur Night, complete with choral performances and a visit from Santa Claus.
