  • Brooklyn Historical Society
This institution, housed in a George Post–designed building that's well over a century old, is dedicated to telling the story of its home borough; it’s a fun and enlightening place to visit or take a group tour any time of year. Current exhibitions include The Emancipation Proclamation—a show that features a rare copy of the document, signed by President Lincoln himself—and Brooklyn Abolitionists, which explores the borough's antislavery movement. Another exhibition, Landmarks of New York, examines buildings that are protected by the city's landmarks law, instituted in 1965.
