New York City Gardens
Spring might be best time to visit one of New York City’s gardens, when they offer an abundance of seasonal programming. These quiet retreats boast colorful landscapes, making for ideal alfresco outings. The New York Botanical Garden, in the Bronx, features more than a million plants on 250 acres. Spring highlights include The Orchid Show (running through April 21) and the Rose Garden festival (June 7 and 8). At the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, there's the centuries-old Japanese tradition of hanami, or cherry-blossom viewing (throughout April, though bloom times can vary), culminating with Sakura Matsuri (April 26–27), which marks the end of the season with all-day festivities. Other flora-related activities include the annual Harbor in Bloom Spring Festival (May 2–4) at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, the vernal equinox celebration (March 23) at Queens Botanical Garden and an assortment of cultural events at Wave Hill.
