  • Dive Bars
Cheap rock 'n' roll dive bars used to run riot through the East Village—but these days they're a dying breed. The latest casualties are Lakeside Lounge, the epic Mars Bar and the Holiday Cocktail Lounge, where W.H. Auden, Allen Ginsberg and a young Madonna used to slum. One Alphabet City stronghold that has so far escaped the wrecking ball is Vazac's Horseshoe Bar. Vazac's, which locals also refer to as the Horseshoe Bar or 7B, is where Paul Newman boozed as a washed-up lawyer in The Verdict and where scenes from The Godfather: Part II were filmed. The sticky feel of authenticity, the smell of beer and the sound of clanging pinball machines all contribute to the vibe. The bars has a photo booth, so you can document that you were there.
