Greenpoint isn't exactly a Barnes & Noble type of neighborhood. Its readers prefer Word, the shoebox-size independent bookstore that's been a Franklin Street fixture since 2007. In practice, Word functions as much as a community center as a bookshop. There are the usual get-to-know-your-bookseller tweaks—staff recommendations dot the shelves—but the wordsmiths are more than usually involved. A "Random House" bulletin board allows readers to search for roommates in the neighborhood; one labeled "Between the Covers" lets amorous bookworms name-drop their favorite authors in hopes of luring a like-minded catch. Word's offerings tend, as you might expect, toward the indie, and it is well stocked with small presses like Europa Editions and the New York Review of Books Classics series, basically the art-house purveyors of the literary world. But a quick perusal of the monthly Top 10 Bestsellers includes 50 Shades of Grey and all three Hunger Games books. No judgment.
