The Annex Antiques Fair & Flea Market became part of the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market on West 39th Street in 2006, and since then, treasure-seekers have spent Saturdays and Sundays sifting through bins, tables and racks for vintage bargains and new crafts. Any other time of time of the week, the thrill of the hunt takes place at Housing Works. The Ninth Avenue outpost of the 12-location thrift shop is divided into sections for menswear, women's fashions, and books and music. Home furnishings, mostly of the midcentury and revival qualities, are scattered throughout the store. The interior has a frugal, warehouse sensibility, but the sparseness makes Housing Works' legendary merchandise vignettes stand out even more flamboyantly—each mise-en-scène practically demands to be purchased in its entirety. And why not buy in bulk? Sales generate 25 percent of the namesake organization's operating budget for helping homeless and low-income people living with HIV/AIDS.
