Like the neighborhood's food and visual-arts scene, performing arts in Long Island City are thriving and diverse. At the Obie Award–winning Chocolate Factory Theater, which is housed in a renovated commercial garage, you'll find multidisciplinary pieces that blur the lines among dance, music, spoken word and video art. It hosts frequent performances by the theater's founders as well as visiting artists. For more lighthearted fare, The Laughing Devil Comedy Club hosts performances most nights of the week, with two shows on Friday and Saturday evenings. It's a good place to catch performers like Todd Barry (Flight of the Conchords; Louie) and Judah Friedlander (30 Rock). Budding comics should check out the early-evening open-mic workshop on Sundays; the 8pm show that night is free for those with military or goverment ID.
