After the Whitney Museum relocates to its brand-new, Renzo Piano–designed building south of the High Line in 2015, the art world's interest in the Meatpacking District will surely intensify. But the savvy are already paying attention. Since 1973, Heller Gallery has shown beautiful, intricate sculpture by artists working primarily in glass. The eponymous owner of the Ivy Brown Gallery takes a more catholic approach. Here you can see an assortment of media—including photographs, sculpture and paintings—by both established and emerging artists, in the space Brown opened in 2001. Located in a basement beneath West 14th Street, Underline Gallery emphasizes innovation over medium, and the ability to spark an emotional connection over the ability to produce name recognition; since its launch in 2011, the space has tended to focus on works related to a single concept, such as gold. Its small area includes a library and a shop with reasonably priced goods, such as books and limited-edition prints, meant to turn art lovers of varying incomes into art owners.
