  • Every Thing Goes Book Cafe & Neighborhood Stage
    208 Bay St., 718-447-8256
Every Thing Goes looks and feels like it dropped on to the northeast shore of Staten Island straight from Bleecker Street or Berkeley, California, circa 1968. This laid-back, community-minded establishment gives patrons ample reasons to while away an afternoon inside. Browse the bargain selection of used books, vinyl, CDs and DVDs; sip an espresso or an exotic herbal tea; snack on a bagel, fruit smoothie or slice of pie; and admire the rotating art exhibitions (most of the pieces, by local artists, are for sale). On Friday and Saturday nights (and sometimes other days of the week), the Neighborhood Stage features a lineup of concerts, open-mic sessions, poetry readings, belly dancing and other diversions, all for the price of a ferry ride (in other words, free). A truly refreshing anachronism, Every Thing Goes is the type of place that is disappearing elsewhere—and that's reason enough to cross the harbor. —HP
