Think of a quintessential West Village setting and Tartine likely comes to mind. Small cafe tables and pairs of metal chairs hug the shaded perimeter of this corner bistro. And, crowded with people inside and out at almost any hour of operation, the scene may as well be a postcard. Inside, the maritime-themed artwork enjoys as little elbow room as the diners do. The chicken potpie, as well as the spicy chicken and even spicier steak au poivre, are perennial favorites, although the always-friendly servers will be happy to make suggestions. Whatever you choose, remember that you'll need to bring your own wine to wash it down, and cash to pay the bill.
