105 Sullivan St., 212-334-5179, SoHo, Manhattan
Follow the rules at Alidoro and you'll be rewarded with one of 40 on-the-money Italian sandwiches, named for iconic figures like Marlon Brando, Luciano Pavarotti and Pinocchio. Don't dither. A posted sign warns, "Read menu or lady behind counter will attack!" Not really, but you may get some sass if you hold up the line—so don't ask questions, and have your cash at the ready. Then be prepared to wait. For the Pinocchio, prosciutto is shaved before your eyes and layered carefully with sopressata, fresh mozzarella, sweet roasted peppers and olive paste. Such goodness takes time. Divert yourself with the collection of Federico Fellini movie posters, Italian DVDs and books like The Cats of Venice on display. When your sandwich is ready, pick it up and move out of the way! There are only two small tables, so the venue is mostly for takeout.
